That's me!

Nicholas Turon was the director of bands for Paint Valley Local School District 2014-2021. Mr. Turon earned his Bachelor of Science in music education and a minor in mathematics from Xavier University in 2013 and his Master of Education in educational leadership from Ohio University in 2019. Before arriving at Paint Valley, Mr. Turon served as Assistant Marching Band Director for New Albany High School and the Middle School Band Director for Newark Heritage Middle School. Since becoming a software engineer in mid 2021, Mr. Turon keeps music in his life through his local community band and saxophone quartet.

During his time at Paint Valley, Mr. Turon more than doubled the size of the band program, took the band to the district’s first-ever appearance at Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Large Group State Adjudicated Event (2017), and first-ever OMEA Large Group State Superior Rating (2018).

Mr. Turon has been a leader beyond the district. In 2016, Mr. Turon founded the Ross County Band Directors Association (RCBDA) to better serve the band students of Ross County. Through the RCBDA, Mr. Turon successfully lobbied for the creation of the Ross County Summer Youth Band (2018) and voted to commission a new piece of music for the Ross County Honor Band with funds generated through the 501(c)3 organization (2020). In collaboration with other area directors, Mr. Turon founded the Ross-Brown Beginning Honor Band (2016) that has grown to an annual 120-student and 4-county event and the Ross-Brown Woodwind Clinic (2019).

Mr. Turon served as the treasurer for Paint Valley Local Education Association 2016-2021 and is a proud Eagle Scout.

How to Schedule a Meeting

The very first thing I teach my student leaders is how to respond to a meeting request and how to schedule a meeting. Qualities of a good leader, conflict resolution, goal setting, and vision are all great things, but if they are not in the room to begin with all is lost. Because of this, attendance is the #1 priority of our student leaders. Of course there are a number of ways to schedule a meeting. The go-to-default option most students use is Pin The Tail on the Donkey method where they just throw out one date/time after another until they (randomly) hit a time when everyone can be there. This is not efficient OR effective. I highly recommend, instead, students and staff use a scheduling tool. Tools When scheduling a meeting there are a number of tools available for free or on subscription. Personally, I like free and use the two tools Doodle or WhenIsGood.net . How to Request Time Off Your Job for Band

One of my biggest frustrations is students skipping band performances or practices because they “need to work.” In their first jobs they ever hold, students regularly struggle to reconcile their demanding personal work schedules with an equally demanding marching band schedule. Oftentimes, the issue is not as much demanding bosses as much as it is a lack of student training on how to recognize their own control they have over the situation. Many times parents, teachers, and employers assume that student workers magically have the skill and courage to request off work without the proper training and guidance when this is clearly not the case. In this entry, I would like to offer a printable guide you can use to help students recognize their own agency to request time off from work in a way that 1) doesn’t compromise hours and 2) will keep the student in good standing with their employer.
